6 books to read in 2021:
1. The tenement
Starting the list with a classic of Brazilian naturalist literature, the work of the great writer Aluísio de Azevedo brings, in the midst of a chaotic place, a vision never approached until that moment. Reading is recommended for all students who wish to add to their lives a little of the author's vision of the living conditions of residents of Rio's tenements. The novel stars two Portuguese immigrants. The language has a naturalistic content, typical of the XNUMXth century.
2. Crooked Plow
Published by Editora Hoje, in Brazil, the novel by Itamar Vieira Junior won three awards: Jabuti and Oceanos, in 2020, and the Leya award, in 2018. The work is classified by the publisher as “a realistic and magical text that reveals a powerful element of social insubordination”. This reading is a great recommendation, as it is set in Brazilian soil, more specifically, in Bahia.
Description by Publisher However: In the depths of the Bahian hinterland, the sisters Bibiana and Belonísia find an old and mysterious knife in the suitcase kept under their grandmother's bed. Then an accident occurs. And forever their lives will be linked - to the point where one needs to be the voice of the other. In a plot conducted with mastery and melodious prose, the novel tells a story of life and death, of combat and redemption.
3. Beyond Rio dos Sinos
The work of Menalton Braff, published by Editora Reformatório, won the Machado de Assis prize, in 1st place in the category of novels. The book is also set in Brazilian territory, with characteristics that are not always the most positive.
The plot reveals a deep, obscure Brazil, forgotten and ignored by the inhabitants of the big cities. The news reports at all times catastrophes accompanied by blood and death. Everything takes place in the Rio dos Sinos Valley, the center of tragedies and conflicts throughout the entire narrative. The inhabitants of this place live on an infertile hill, studded with stones, and the dream of the protagonists, Nicanor and Florinda, is to live in the floodplain of the river.
Structured in two time planes, World War II and the Brazilian Military Dictatorship, past and present run parallel until they converge on a single road that leads the reader to brave the same paths and mishaps trodden by Florinda and Nicanor: the hardships of nature, creation of the children, the daily (almost human) contact with the animals.
In this valley lost on the map and in time, you can hear the howl of the wind on the hill and the singing sound of the stones of Rio dos Sinos. Love, hate, betrayal, revenge, grudge and death are burning themes that are articulated in a tragic and at the same time poetic way. What overcomes any barrier? The strength of a woman who decided to control her life alone.
4. Defrost
Zeno, a glacier researcher and obsessed with global warming, is the radical protagonist developed by the Bulgarian writer Ilija Trojanow to star in the 2013 work “Thaw”. Iceberger, with confused radio communication, the novel gradually reveals its plot, giving hints that this will not be a tedious journey.
Zeno recalls the complete melting of the glacier he was studying in the Alps, the outbreak that overtook him after that tragic “death” and the failure of his marriage. The ship moves towards Antarctica and the events grow in the same proportion.
5. Anna Karenina
Leo Tolstoy's Russian work has the essence of capturing its reader at every moment of the book. Added to this awakening of interest, the novel brings a vision of how women are seen in the face of the cruelty of society. In this way, literary realism is a great indication for students, both outside and inside the university, as the book exercises a social vision.
“All the diversity, all the charm, all the beauty of life is made of shadow and light”, writes Leo Tolstoy in the novel that Fyodor Dostoyevsky defined as “impeccable”. Originally published in the form of fascicles between 1875 and 1877, it integrated the pages of a book in 1877. A good part of the work's fame is due to the amazing similarity with life. Tolstoy leads the reader through a hall full of music, perfumes, lace dresses and an environment of almost palpable images of Tsarist Russia.
In the plot, no one is safe from judgment: there are no heroes, nor failures, but complex, ambiguous people, who are not restricted to ready-made formulas. Religion, family, politics and social class are put to the test by a married aristocrat who, when involved in an extramarital affair, experiences the joy and pain of a deeply conflicted love, which reveals traces of shadow and light.
6. After
The “After” saga brings interesting books that take place in university life. The main character is Theresa, who lives in a college dorm and shares the environment with new friendships and cultures.
In the first book, 18-year-old Tessa leaves home, where she lives with her mother, to go to college. Until then, her life boils down to studying and going to the movies with her boyfriend, whom she has known since she was a child. Everything changes after the young woman moves to college, meets a friend who loves parties, and the rebellious young Hardin, who teases her with her “pretty girl” way.
Reading is recommended for romance fans who see academic life as a way to transform their worldview.
