Approval at the university is one of the greatest achievements of a student who struggled to win the much-dreamed vacancy. Upon arriving on the first day at the college, the student is welcomed by the veterans of his course with an event called hazing, which is nothing more than a ritual that celebrates the entry of this new member to the course and the university – the event can also be called solidarity hoaxes.
Nowadays, several universities in the country, from north to south, are opting for the solidarity hazing project. But, after all, what is it? In this article, we will explain the practice that brings good to those in need, in addition to highlighting the types of actions carried out.
Do you know what the story of the trot is?
Believe it or not, the practice of hazing in universities is not new. It was created in the XNUMXth century, in the Middle Ages. According to historians, it is believed that this ceremonial rite was created by the knights of the time. When a soldier passed another in the same rank, the knight would raise the visor of his armor as a sign of respect. The origin of the term trot is also from the time. The meaning is a comparison of how horses in the Middle Ages moved slowly between a walk and a gallop. In the XNUMXth century, hazing at European universities was manifested to new entrants by the institution's hierarchy that seniors and freshmen had socially.
Anyway, the history of hazing and the term demonstrate a symbolic and social character with the rites of passage to assume an identity in universities.
What are solidarity pranks?
Due to different histories of hazing violence in Brazilian public and private institutions, these types of rituals were banned in universities, as an alternative, veterans find a way to welcome new members and also do good to those in need: through the solidarity prank, which was born in the 1990s, with the aim of helping people outside the community.
Actions are carried out, most of the time, by students who are in the initial stages of the university course each new semester. The initiatives are organized by students and new course entrants. Hazing not only has a voluntary bias, but is also a way for the student to interact with society.
Benefits of solidarity hazing
Doing good not only benefits those who are participating in the action, but also helps those in need. One of the biggest positive points of solidarity hazing is the actions carried out.
The chosen social institutions will be presented with actions carried out by the students, in addition to the integration between society and academics. Solidarity hazing not only encourages contributions to citizenship, but society also welcomes people who are concerned about the community.
It was with this purpose in mind, to help the community, that the DPaschoal Foundation created, in 1999, the Citizenship Trot. An event whose main objective is to encourage the involvement of university students in citizenship actions, as a way of awakening them to entrepreneurship and social protagonism. The best initiatives are awarded with a certificate of participation issued by Fundação Educar DPaschoal.
Types of solidarity hazing
Doing interaction work with new colleagues from college warms the heart. When the work is aimed at people in need, the essence of gratitude is even greater. Check out some actions that can be done in solidarity prank calls.
Donate blood and bone marrow
It's very simple. All you have to do is register and make a habit of donating every three months and bring a colleague who is participating in the charitable prank. In addition to doing good for you and your friend, you will do good for those who need it most.
Collection of clothes and coats
Do you have a lot of clothes in your closet? Detach and throw the idea for the solidarity trot. The act of collecting things that are not useful, but for those who need it, makes you feel light. However, all collections are made with items in good condition.
Collection of food
With the worsening of the coronavirus pandemic in Brazil, added to the end of the first phase of the Emergency Aid, one of the chronic problems in Brazil has once again been highlighted: hunger. Therefore, universities unite with the collection of non-perishable food and milk for the distribution of basic baskets to communities that need help.
Visits to nursing homes and orphanages
The act of donating time with charitable prank members does a lot of good for people who want to be heard and want to have fun. Visits to nursing homes and orphanages, for example, are great for this purpose.
During these visits, music activities, story readings, dance activities and painting on the children's faces are carried out. And the coolest thing is that in solidarity pranks, everything is done with lots of love and care. Here's a tip: if you're organizing a hazing with your freshmen, focus on off-the-beaten-path places.
Examples of solidarity hazing by universities
Recently, the School of Communication and Arts of the University of São Paulo carried out a blood donation campaign. The Federal Institute of Rio de Janeiro carried out the same campaign that the USP students did: the students went to Hemorio to carry out the collective campaign.
Another action carried out was in 2018. USP Administration, Accounting and Economics freshmen were encouraged to cut their hair for the NGO Cabelegria, which donates wigs to children with cancer.
